If you're a recent graduate in Brisbane holding a 485 Temporary Graduate visa, you've got a limited window to turn your Australian study into a long-term future here.
One of the most reliable ways to do that is employer sponsorship — moving from your 485 to a 482 Skills in Demand visa, and eventually to permanent residency.
Here's exactly how that pathway works, and how to time it.
First, understand your 485 window
The 485 is temporary — typically 2 years for a Bachelor or Master's degree, or up to 3 years for a PhD/Master's by research (longer for some nationalities, such as Indian graduates under the AI-ECTA).
It can't usually be extended indefinitely, so the goal is to use it to qualify for a longer-term visa before it expires.

Step 1 — Land skilled work in your field
Employer sponsorship needs three things to come together:
a genuine skilled position
an employer willing to sponsor
and you meeting the work-experience requirement
The 482 requires 12 months of relevant full-time experience in your nominated occupation, so the sooner you start working in your field, the sooner you'll qualify.
Use your 485 years deliberately — every month of relevant experience counts.
Step 2 — Find (or develop) a sponsoring employer
Your employer needs to become — or already be — an approved Standard Business Sponsor.
Many Brisbane businesses are open to sponsoring a valued employee but don't know how.
We help on both sides: getting the employer sponsorship-ready and confirming your occupation is eligible.

Step 3 — Apply for the 482 Skills in Demand visa
With a sponsor and the required experience, you transition to a 482.
This gives you up to 4 more years of sponsored work in Australia — and, critically, it starts your permanent residency clock.

Step 4 — Transition to permanent residency (186 visa)
After working for your sponsor in the same occupation for 2 of the 3 years on your 482, you can usually apply for the 186 permanent visa through the Temporary Residence Transition stream.
No occupation list applies at that point — a big advantage.
485 → 12 months' experience → 482 SID → 2 of 3 years → 186 PRThe timing mistake to avoid
The single biggest error we see in Brisbane graduates is leaving it too late.
Because the 482 → 186 pathway needs years of qualifying work, the experience has to start early in your 485.
If you wait until your final months, you may run out of visa before you've built what you need.
Plan at the start of your 485, not the end.
What if you can't find a sponsor?
You're not out of options.
Depending on your occupation and points, skilled visas (189/190) or the regional 494 → 191 pathway may suit.
Regional Queensland roles are often less competitive and can be a faster route to PR.
