If you are on a 482 Skills in Demand visa right now, the biggest question on your mind isprobably this: how do I turn this into permanent residency?
The good news is that in 2026 you have more than one pathway, and which one is right for you depends on your job, yourexperienceand where you work.
This guide walks through every 482 to PR pathway in plainEnglishso you know exactly which road is yours.
The 482 to PR Roadmap for 2026
There are four main pathways from the 482visato permanent residency:
The 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream: after two years with your employer
The 186 Direct Entry stream: if you have the experience and a skills assessment
A DAMA: if you are in a regional area or need concessions
A company-specificLabourAgreement: for businesses with unique workforce needs
The best pathway is different for everyone. It comes down to your job, yourtimingand your employer.
Pathway 1: The 186 Visa Temporary Residence Transition Stream
This is the most common pathway and the one most 482 visa holders are aiming for. People call itthe TRT.
What Changed in November 2023
A lot of people still do not know this: you used to need three years before you could go for it.But since November 2023,thatdropped to just two years.
The rule now is that you need to have worked for your sponsoring employer on your 457 or 482visafor at least two of the last three years in the same occupation that was last nominated.
Key Requirements
Two of the last three years working for your sponsoring employer in the same nominated occupation
Under 45 years of age
Competent English: IELTS 6.0 in each band, or equivalent
No occupation list requirement: that requirement was removed
What If You Are Over 45?
Being over 45 does not automatically shut the door. There are age exemptions for the transition stream. The most useful one is for higher earners: if you have been paid above the Fair Work high income threshold for the last couple of years on your 482, the age cap may simply not apply to you.
If you are over 45 and you have quietly written off PR, do not. Talk to us first. You may have far more options than you think.
If you have been working in the same role for the last two years, this isvery likelyyour fastest and cleanest road to PR.
Pathway 2: The 186 Direct Entry Stream
What if you cannot use the transition stream?Maybe youhave changed employers, or you have not hit the two years yet. That is where the direct entry stream comes in.
Direct entry is more demanding because you are skipping the work-your-way-up route.
Key Requirements
Your occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List
Under 45 years of age
A positive skills assessment for your occupation
At least three years of full-time work experience in your nominated occupation
Competent English
Thesimple wayto think about it: the transition stream rewards loyalty. Direct entry rewards experience and qualifications. A lot of people qualify for both, and part of our job is working out which one is stronger for your situation.
Two Things That Catch People Out on Both 186 Streams
1. Salary.Your nominationhas tomeet the Core Skills Income Threshold. From 1 July 2026, that rises to $79,423, or the market rate for your job, whichever is higher.
2. Timing. If your nomination is lodged on or after 1 July 2026, it is assessed against that new higher threshold. If you are close to being ready, thelodgementdate genuinelymatters. That is a conversation worth having before you launch.
Pathway 3: A DAMA (Designated Area Migration Agreement)
This is the pathway most people have never heard of, and it can be a lifesaver.
What if your occupation is not on the standard list, oryou donot quitemeet the standard requirements? That is where a DAMA comes in.
What Is a DAMA?
DAMAs are special agreements between the Australian Government and specific regions of Australia, designed to fill locallabourshortages.
Why People Use a DAMA
A wider list of occupations, including semi-skilled roles not on the standard list
Concessions on age requirements
Concessions on English requirements
Concessions on the salary threshold
Many DAMAs offer a pathway to permanent residency
If you are working in regional Australia, or you are open to it, a DAMA could be the door to PR that the standard program closes.
Pathway 4: A Company-SpecificLabourAgreement
This pathway is particularly relevant for employers. A business negotiates its own agreement directly with the Department of Home Affairs because the standard visa program does not fit their workforce needs.
It can unlock occupations and concessions that are not otherwise available, and like the other pathways, it can include a pathway to permanent residency through the 186labouragreement stream.
These take time andexpertiseto set up, but for the right business they are powerful. If the standard program keeps saying no, this is often the yes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I need to work for my employer before applying for the 186 TRT?
Since November 2023, you need to have worked for your sponsoring employer in the same nominated occupation for at least two of the last three years. Thepreviousthree-year requirement no longer applies.
Does the 186 TRT stream have an occupation list?
No. The occupation list requirement was removed from the 186 TRT stream. You do not need your occupation to be on any list to use this pathway.
What is the income threshold for the 186visafrom 1 July 2026?
From 1 July 2026, nominations must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold of $79,423, or the market rate for the role, whichever is higher. If your nomination is lodged on or after 1 July 2026, it is assessed against this figure.
What if I am over 45?
Being over 45 does not automatically rule you out of the 186 TRT stream. There are age exemptions, including one for higher earners who have been paid above the Fair Work high income threshold. Talk to us before writing off your options.
What is the difference between the TRT and Direct Entry streams?
The TRT stream rewards loyalty: you need two years with the same employer in the same role.
