Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485

In this blog, we will be talking about Temporary Graduate Visa subclass 485. It is a temporary Visa that allows International students to live, study and work after they have finished their studies.

In this blog, we cover the following:

  • Who are eligible for Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485?

  • What are the four streams under Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485?

  • How to book a free consultation for Graduate Visa 485?

This visa currently has four streams.

  • Graduate Work Stream

  • Post-Study Work Stream

  • Second Post-Study Work Stream

  • Replacement Stream

The first one is the Graduate Work Stream. This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications relevant to specific occupations Australia needs. It lets you live, study, and work in Australia temporarily. This visa is usually granted for up to 18 months, but it has been temporarily increased to 24 months for visas granted from 1st December 2021. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for five years.

The second one is the Post-Study Work Stream. This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live, work, and study in Australia temporarily. This visa is usually granted for 2 to 4 years, depending on your qualification. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for five years.

The third one is the Second Post-Study Work Stream. This visa

is for holders of a Temporary Graduate Visa, First Post-Study Work Stream, or Replacement Stream who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. It lets you live, work and study in Australia temporarily. The Second Post-Study Work Stream Visa is granted between 1 and 2 years, depending on the regional location of the educational institution you graduated from, which led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate Visa in the Post-Study Work Stream. The regional area you live in as the holder of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream or your temporary graduate visa in the replacement stream.

The fourth one is the Replacement Stream. This visa is for current and former temporary graduate Visa holders who lost time on their original visa due to covid-19 travel restrictions. It lets you live, work, and study in Australia temporarily. It is usually granted for the duration of 18 months to 5 years. You will receive the same grant period as your previous visa with the exception of: if you were previously granted a post-study work visa for two years as a result of your master of coursework qualification, you would now receive three years. If you were previously granted a graduate work stream visa for 18 months, you would receive two years. It's a temporary measure. Applicants should check the current period that applies when they lodge their application.

Now it doesn't matter which stream you are applying for your 485 Visa in; you must plan your steps before lodging this visa.

Here are some of my tips:

-If you are eligible to get your skills assessment based on your qualification, organize the skills assessment as soon as you complete your studies

-If you're an I.T, Accounting, and Engineering graduate, then you may want to consider enrolling in a professional year program as soon as you lodge your temporary graduate Visa

-If you have completed a trade course, you should enroll in the Job-Ready program as soon as you have lodged your 485 Visa

-If your occupation requires work experience to get a skills assessment, then you should prioritize getting a job in your nominated occupation

Please note that: State Requirements keep changing every year, so the first focus should always be getting the skills assessment if you're not in a situation to move straight away.

You may also want to consider studying on your temporary graduate visa if:

You are not able to get a skills assessment from your previous studies, or the points requirement of your occupation is too high, and you would like to have a plan B by studying another course for a second skills assessment.
