The Department of Home Affairs has introduced updated processing practices for Partner visa applications.

This April 2026 Partner visa update introduces stricter processing rules that all applicants should be aware of.

These changes place greater responsibility on applicants and agents to ensure applications are complete, accurate, and supported by strong evidence from the start.

Strict RFI Protocols

The Department will now provide only one opportunity to respond to a Request for Information (RFI).

Impact

Applications may be decided immediately if the timeframe expires without a response or extension request.

Relationship Evidence Requirements

At Lodgement

Applications must be supported by current and adequate evidence of a genuine and ongoing relationship.

Note

Failure to provide sufficient evidence at the start is a primary cause of processing delays.

Optimising Digital Submissions

Labelling & Organisation

All documents must be:

  • Accurately labelled

  • Categorised correctly

Communication

  • Use ImmiAccount as the primary contact channel

  • If unavailable, use the Partner Processing Enquiry Form

  • Avoid using the Partner visa mailbox for routine updates

Police and Health Criteria

New Overseas Certificates

Required if an applicant spends 12+ cumulative months in a country since the grant of a temporary (309/820) visa.

Strategy

Check current processing times before scheduling health exams to avoid expiration.

Common Causes of Delays

  • Not responding to RFIs within timeframe

  • Relationship evidence not current

  • Expired police certificates or health checks

  • Documents uploaded to incorrect categories

  • Missing or incomplete sponsor details

  • Failure to notify changes in relationship

Why This April 2026 Partner Visa Update Matters

These changes reflect a shift in how applications are assessed.

There is now:

  • Less follow-up from the Department

  • Faster decisions based on available information

  • Greater importance on submitting complete applications at the start

Final Practitioner Checklist

✔ Relationship evidence refreshed (6–12 months)?
✔ Sponsor contact details current?
✔ ImmiAccount files descriptively named?
