As the year comes to a close, the latest Partner Visa data provides helpful insight into how many visas were granted and how long applications are taking to process. This recap highlights key figures released by the Department of Home Affairs and explains what they mean for couples planning their Partner Visa pathway.
Partner Visas Remain One of Australia’s Most Common Visa Pathways
Partner Visas continue to be one of the most common visa pathways in Australia. Every year, thousands of couples apply for a Partner Visa Australia so they can live together and build a future.
The 2024–2025 Partner Visa data shows strong demand, more stable processing times, and why proper preparation remains very important.
Partner Visas in Australia: 2024–2025 Overview
Partner Visas make up the largest part of Australia’s Family Migration Program.
In the 2024–25 program year:
43,386 temporary Partner visas were granted
35,204 permanent Partner visas were granted
While the number of temporary Partner Visas granted was slightly lower than the previous year, Partner Visas remain one of the most granted visa categories in Australia.
Partner Visa Processing Times in 2024–2025
Processing times for Partner Visas have become more stable compared to previous years.
Based on official data:
Temporary Partner Visas
75% of applications were processed within 16 months
This improved from 18 months in the 2023–24 program year
Permanent Partner Visas
75% of applications were processed within 14 months, similar to the previous year
The Department of Home Affairs continued to focus on older and more complex applications, helping reduce long waiting times.
As at 30 June 2025, less than 5% of temporary Partner Visa applications had been waiting for more than 24 months — a significant improvement compared to earlier years.
Partner Visa Applications Are Increasing
Demand for Partner Visas remains high.
In the 2024–25 program year:
68,105 Partner Visa applications were lodged
This is a 4.5% increase compared to the previous year
Because more people are applying, the number of applications waiting to be processed has also increased. As at 30 June 2025, there were 96,839 temporary Partner Visa applications on hand.
This means competition for processing time is higher, and well-prepared applications matter more than ever.
How the Partner Visa Two-Stage Process Works
Australia’s Partner Visa follows a two-stage process:
A temporary Partner Visa is assessed first
A permanent Partner Visa is assessed later
Both stages are included in the same application. Most applicants become eligible for the permanent stage two years after lodgement, as long as the relationship remains genuine and ongoing.
This system helps ensure that only genuine couples are granted permanent residence.
What These Partner Visa Numbers Mean for Applicants
The latest Partner Visa statistics show that:
Partner Visas remain a popular and realistic pathway to live together in Australia
Processing times are improving, but still take time
Increased demand means strong preparation is essential
Poor or incomplete applications can lead to delays or requests for more documents
Why Preparation Is Still Important
Even with improving processing times, Partner Visa applications remain detailed and carefully assessed. Each couple’s situation is different, and document requirements can vary.
Without proper guidance, couples may experience:
Delays in processing
Requests for further information
Uncertainty about the most suitable visa pathway
Getting advice early can help couples understand their options and avoid unnecessary stress.
