If you're living in Australia on a temporary visa — a 485 graduate visa, a 482 work visa, a student visa, or a bridging visa — you already know how uncertain the road to permanent residence can be.
Occupation lists change, points thresholds climb, employer sponsorship falls through, and the clock on your current visa keeps ticking.
There's an option many people in your situation overlook: New Zealand.
Through the New Zealand Business Investor Visa (BIV), capable business people can buy and run an established New Zealand business and build a clear pathway to residence — for themselves and their family.
Important: Australian citizens can generally live in New Zealand under trans-Tasman arrangements. People in Australia on a temporary visa do not automatically have that right — which is exactly why the BIV is worth understanding.
What is the Business Investor Visa?
The BIV is a "work-to-residence" visa for hands-on owner-operators.
You acquire an established New Zealand business, actively run and grow it, and after meeting the operating requirements you become eligible to apply for residence.
It's the opposite of a passive "golden visa" — it's for people who want to build.
The Two Streams

Both require you to buy and genuinely run a qualifying business.
The Fast-Track stream costs more but can deliver residence up to two years sooner.
Why this appeals to temporary visa holders in Australia
You control the timeline. Instead of waiting on points, occupation lists or a sponsor, your pathway depends on your own investment and effort.
A faster route than you might expect. The Fast-Track stream can lead to residence in as little as ~24 months from arrival — often quicker than the Australian 188A → 888A business trajectory.
You already have the profile. If you've owned or managed a business — including before you came to Australia — you may already meet the experience requirement.
Your family comes too. Your partner and dependent children can be included.
It's familiar and close. New Zealand is a short flight away, English-speaking, and culturally close to Australia.
Could you qualify? The four headline requirements
Age — 55 years or younger when you apply.
Business experience — at least 3 years as a business owner or in senior management.
English — an acceptable standard of English (broadly IELTS 5.0 or equivalent).
Funds — your NZD $1M or $2M investment, plus a further NZD $500,000 in reserve settlement funds — all lawful and unencumbered.
You'll also need to buy a qualifying business: established for at least 5 years, employing at least 5 staff, in which you take a minimum 25% stake, and not in an excluded category (no franchises, fast food, convenience stores, residential property, or passive sectors)
The two things that derail most applications
Choosing the wrong business
People fall in love with a business, pay a deposit, then discover it would never have qualified. We screen targets before you commit.
Source of funds
Your money must be lawfully earned and traceable — no cash, crypto, or borrowed capital, and (unlike some visas) gifted funds aren't accepted except by inheritance through a will.
Getting these right early is the difference between a smooth application and a costly delay.
Why use a dual-licensed adviser
New Zealand immigration advice can only legally be given by a Licensed Immigration Adviser.
Nationwide Migration & Education holds that licence (No. 20260073) and is a registered Australian migration agent (MARN 1800859) — so if you're weighing up staying in Australia versus a move to New Zealand, you can get advice on both sides of the Tasman from one team.
Frequently asked questions
I'm on a 485 / 482 / student visa — can I apply for the BIV? Your current Australian visa doesn't disqualify you. Eligibility depends on the BIV criteria above, not your Australian status. Book a consultation and we'll assess your situation.
Do I have to actively run the business? Yes — this is a hands-on, owner-operator visa. If you'd prefer a passive investment, New Zealand's Active Investor Plus route may suit you instead.
Can I do this from Australia? Yes. Many of our clients start the process while still in Australia. We manage the trans-Tasman strategy for you.
Take the next step
If your Australian PR pathway feels uncertain and you have the capital and experience to run a business, New Zealand may be a faster, more controllable route to residence.
